AVA Belfast

Although Ireland and particularly the city of Belfast isn’t usually regarded as a destination for alternative nightlife and electronic music compared to some of its European counterparts, the newly emerged AVA festival in Belfast is increasingly putting Belfast on the radar for just that.

At just three years old the AVA festival, has grown in numbers and magnitude each year booking more and more bigger artists which this year, was even expanded across a two-day line up. With the help of local Belfast born and bred duo Bicep giving Belfast a reputation for producing excellent talent the festival has even attracted the likes of Boiler Room to get in on the action. This year the festival hosted a huge line up including Jeff Mills, Marcel Dettman, Midland, Bicep, Denis Sulta and Ben UFO to name but a few. The stages are split across a large indoor warehouse and two outdoor stages. The Saturday Boiler Room stage hosted the likes of home grown talent Jordan and Or:la who definitely got the crowd going.

Something unique and genuine about the festival is the series of talks and conferences which kick start the festival before the music starts allowing aspiring industry wannabes to hear from and question the experts. The Talks were hosted by the likes of Jeff Mills, Renaat Vandepapeliere (R&S Records) Boiler Room and Resident Advisor as part of Friday’s conference.

The setting of the festival in the heart of Belfast’s old ship yard district including a back drop of two very large bright yellow shipping cranes famously known as Belfast landmarks, creates the perfect surrounding for an inner-city festival. AVA Festival and Conference 2017 is a true showcase of Irish talent, from both the North and South of the country – and highlights the incredible wealth of creativity sprouting from this incredible city. It is one to watch out for that will be sure to attract a wider ranging European audience. You can’t be sure of the weather but you will be sure of an excellent atmosphere and an amazing line up of emerging local talent alongside big name DJs.
